Over GH¢9m Collected As Road Toll Unaccounted For—Report Reveals Rot

A report published by the Auditor General's Department has revealed massive corruption in the administration of the road fund.

The report reveals six toll booth operators failed to account for more than 9 million Ghana cedis between January and June 2010.

According to the report, tickets were issued to the road fund secretariat by the Controller and Accountant General's Department.

The rot occurred due to the failure of the fund managers to keep stock of the register containing details of receipts covering payments.

Additionally, the report said, the secretariat failed to keep vouchers which could have been issued to recipients of tickets to indicate the details of tickets issued to them.

Again, the fund managers also failed to issue waybill tickets which could have served as evidence to the various stations.

The revelation comes on the back of Monday's protest by angry youth in Ashaiman who blocked the Tema motorway to express their disgust at the deplorable nature of their roads.

The report also said nearly 500 thousand Ghana cedis collected at six toll booths was never lodged in the road fund account as required by law.
