Northern Rhodesia gained independence from Britain, becoming the Republic of Zambia, with Kenneth Kaunda as President.

Post independence Zambia actively supported the liberation movements in other parts of Southern Africa including the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA) in Angola; the Zimbabwe African People's Union (ZAPU); the African National Congress (ANC) and Pan Africanist Congress (PAC) in South Africa; and the South West Africa People's Organization (SWAPO) in Namibia.
