STATEMENT OF THE NATIONAL UNION OF GHANA STUDENTS (NUGS) ON TH STATE OF THE NATION'S ADDRESS BY PRESIDENT MILLS

Let us see you act more President Mills_nugs calls

On Thursday, 16 February, 2012 President Mills delivered his fourth State of the Nation's address in accordance with Articles two and 36 (5) of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana amidst cheers and hooting.

The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) lauds President Mills for helping in the eradication of cases of guinea worm across the country and for what seems as his iron-clad control of the national economy. Inasmuch as the Union lauds the Mills government for keeping vigil in matters of the economy, NUGS would also commend former President Kuffuor too for securing the needed funding which provided pregnant mothers fee-free delivery. This is the spirit that fulfils the dream of a young nation like ours and we must encourage that in our country.

NUGS was however, disappointed when President Mills failed hugely to touch on the unprecedented huge number of unemployed youths in our country in his address. The issue of unemployment has seen close to three youth unemployed associations sprung up ever in the history of our nation.

The Union was also shocked at the low standard of leadership provided by our able-men and women of our nation's Parliament. The hooting at President Mills engineered by our fathers and mothers in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is despicable. Though not new in the House because members of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) have also engaged in the unholy attitude during the reign of former President Kuffuor, the Union believes such attitude does not live any good impression in the minds of the young.

The Union is therefore calling on our Members of Parliament (MP) from both sides to please lead by example and let us respect roles of the top.

We are also calling on our MPs and the other authorities involved in order four us all to set a standard requirement of delivery in future state of the nation's address. This act will save us from leaders who come to deliver what they like.

In conclusion, with an expected growth of 14 per cent (14%) in our nation's economy, the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) expects our national government to tackle the skyrocketing cases of unemployed youths who walk on our streets in search of un-existing work; access to social amenities must be within the reach of our people especially the poor; industrialization and fine-tuning of raw products before export must herald the forward march of our country; as well as a guaranteed Junior and Secondary education without which development is a mirage must be prioritize.

The Union is confident that when the above is heeded to, our small but powerful nation has no limit in the world comity of nations.

Thank you.
