NUGS-NCCE DIRECTOR'S COMMENT IS CONDEMNABLE!

03.02.2012 LISTEN

The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) sees the suggestion by the Acting Director of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) for the Agona East District in the Central Region, Stephen Agyei Yeboah, that political grouping in tertiary institutions should be banned as a comment that must be condemned with the contempt it deserved.

In a country and month when NUGS is pleading with the Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU) of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) of the University of Cape Coast (UCC) to abandon their sit-down strike and give back the services they have withdrew from students, a comment like the one we had from the Acting Director of NCCE for the Agona East District is outrageous to say the least.

Mr. Stephen Agyei Yeboah should be in a better position to know that, the Republican Constitution of 1992 in Article 21 (1) e “All persons shall have the right to freedom of association, which shall include freedom to form or join trade unions or other associations, national or international, for the protection of their interest” and anything short of this amount to what the same constitution say “generally is unlawful”. Besides, political groupings like TESCHART of the CPP, TESCON of the NPP and the TEIN of the NDC serve as training grounds for future national leaders.

Ask the Political Parties in Ghana and they will point to you the significance of such training and the impact they are making on the future leadership of Ghana.

In an election year as our nation finds itself, the NCCE should rather be apt to their constitutional responsibility and try to find some innovative and creative caveats of having their essence which is fizzling into the thin air to be felt by the good people of Ghana who are being whitewashed with violent comments by the very people begging for our vote.

NUGS will not tolerate such reactionary comments and stands to condemn such comments with the highest contempt.
