The Ghanaian market has in recent times been flooded with cheap import of products. This has been a major challenge to Ghanaian producers who have described the unbridled importation as a bane to the growth of the manufacturing sector.
Some local firms are however leaving no stone unturned to get Ghanaians to patronize locally produced products.
According to Mr. Kofi Akowuah Kyei, President of MOFCO Furniture Company Limited in Kumasi, competing against cheap foreign imports demands sacrifices to produce good quality products.
He says promoting quality can be a unique selling point for manufactuers.
Established barely four years ago, MOFCO is recording higher patronage because of the high standards set in the materials used in producing its home and office furniture.
Mr. Akowuah Kyei tells Luv Biz Report there is an increasing public consciousness to invest in durable materials, stating the furniture industry is no exception.
“The fact is that MOFCO use solid wood and over there or the imported ones they normally use the press-board but the only this is the finishing, which is nice. So we realized that if we come up with quality wood and good finishing, it's our advantage to get the market from all people of this country.
“Nowadays, people know quality because we see people building very nice offices, nice houses, hotels and they need something of good quality and high standard to take care of the interior”, Mr. Akowuah Kyei said.
He noted that whilst expecting the government to help create the enabling environment for local businesses to grow, attitude to work needs to change and financial institutions should be willing to lend to long-term ventures.
MOFCO Furniture plans to open showrooms across the country in the next couple of years as well as expand to the West African market
