The Takoradi township was thrown into a state of mourning yesterday, when an articulated truck ran over some school children who were crossing the road, killing three on the spot, with two others dying later in hospital.
The children, who are all from Agyiba International School at Airport Ridge, a prime residential area in Takoradi, were crossing the road after they had closed from school, when the incident happened.
Available information indicates that a traffic warder accompanying the children signaled the cars to stop, which they obeyed, but the articulated truck driver apparently ignored the order and drove through the children, who were then crossing the road.
The driver of the truck, with registration number AS1140N, has since gone into hiding.
There was heavy traffic build up on the main Kwesimintsin Highway, where the accident occurred, as parents upon hearing the news rushed to the scene to look for their children.
