Auto mechanics to access modern vehicle diagnostic tools

Ghanaian auto mechanics would soon be able to access modern machinery in the repair and maintenance of new electronic vehicles coming into the system.

The auto-diagnostic tools will be installed nationwide on a hire-purchase basis with funding from the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFUND).

Informal Sector Coordinator of at the Council for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (COTVET), Kwabena Adu Amanianpong disclosed this to Luv Fm in Kumasi.

COTVET is training 200 master craftsmen, under the Ghana National Association of Garages, in modern automotive engineering.

Mr. Adu Amanianpong says the training-of-trainers workshop is designed to create jobs through increased knowledge in computer-based vehicular repairs and maintenance.

He tells Luv Fm the intervention is aimed at salvaging the local automobile industry. “Technology is growing; now we no longer use carburetors, all the vehicles coming use electronic systems. So we have seen the need of giving training to these master craftsmen on the way to repairing these modern equipment”, Mr. Adu Amanianpong observed.

He says identifiable trade associations would be partnered in installing the auto-diagnostic machinery, stating that “we have drawn policy, we have prepared budget for all this. So immediate after this training, I'm sure this machine will come up before the year ends”.

The Danish Development Agency, DANIDA and the Government of Ghana are supporting training for master-craftsmen in four-trade areas, including auto-mechanics, cosmetology, garment and electronics.
