Former Deputy Minister of Sports has questioned the renaming of the Ohene Djan Stadium to Accra Sports Stadium by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA).

He contended that the power to rename the facility lies with the Ministry of Youth and Sports and not the AMA.

It would be recalled that the Ohene Djan Stadium was officially renamed through a resolution in Accra.

Announcing the new name on Friday, the Accra Metropolitan Chief Executive, Alfred Vanderpuije said the Assembly, after taking so many things into consideration, had unanimously passed a resolution and changed the name to its former name, the Accra Sports Stadium.

The facility was renamed Ohene Djan Stadium in 2004, after the country's first Director of Sports.

The renaming became quite controversial and was opposed by some indigenes of Accra who felt that a prominent Ga should be given the honor since the stadium is a centerpiece of downtown Accra.

The AMA boss explained that upon consideration of a number of petitions from the Ga-Dangbe Youth Association, the Ga Traditional Council, and Revered Gas, the Assembly saw the need to revert the name to Accra Sports Stadium.

Did the Ga's build that stadium or the government of Ghana? Is the BABA YARA stadium in the Northern region? I think the non-Akan people in Ghana are very close-minded people. To them everything is based on TRIBE. Over 100% of natural resources in Ghana are from the Akan region which was used to build the stadium. I think we should just create AKANLAND and see how the other tribes will survive. I know JATO may be involved in this matter.
