INFORMATION reaching The Chronicle in Takoradi indicates that the Huni Valley Senior High School in the Bogoso-Prestea district of the western region has been closed down.
The decision was taken last Saturday after students went on rampage on campus. The motive behind the action of the students is not clear but a source told this reporter that the students were protesting against high school fees. The Headmaster of the School, Mr. T. K. Tandoh confirmed the closure of the school in a telephone interview with The Chronicle.
Accordingly, the school's management board decided to close down the school after the students had gone on a demonstration.
Mr. Tandoh said though no property was destroyed, management thought it was better to close the School down indefinitely, to protect life and property. The Headmaster would, however, not explain what might have prompted the students to go on the demonstration. “You can't ask me that question because I don't report to you”, he said.
Mr. Tandoh could also not tell when the school will be re-opened, saying the Directors of the school will have to meet first, to take such a decision. The Police are currently patrolling the campus.
Meanwhile, information reaching this reporter indicates that the Western Regional Directorate of the Ghana Education Service has been informed about the closure of the school. The Public Relations Officer of the Directorate, Mr. Joseph Yankey confirmed this in a telephone interview.
He however, denied that the Directorate ordered the closure of the school, adding that “it cannot be possible”.
Asked when the school was likely to be re-opened, he replied that the Directorate would have to receive a written notice from the Headmaster before the next line of action would be taken.
