Oyoko, June 18, GNA- Students of Oyoko Methodist Senior High School near Koforidua on Wednesday planted about 1,500 seedlings of various tree species to mark the World Environment Day Celebration.
Each student planted a tree seedling alongside the main Koforidua Kumasi road and all over the school compound and its surroundings as a measure to protect the environment.
The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Nana Kwasi Adjei Boateng, who planted the first tree on behalf of the Eastern Regional Minister, Mr. Kwadwo Afram-Asiedu, called on the school authorities to ensure that the trees were nurtured to realize its purpose.
He observed that during Ghana's 50th anniversary celebration last year a similar project was embarked on in schools within the municipality to symbolize the golden jubilee but could not be sustained and urged them to take the exercise serious.
The MCE said Ghana was part of the threat of the global warming issue and therefore any measure such as tree planting meant to protect the environment from further damage should be given the necessary attention.
Mr. Kwasi Owusu-Sekyere, Regional Director of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), said global warming was a threat to the world's environment hence the need for measures to be put in place to mitigate the effects.
He said a major threat of the climate change was the issue of flooding since the seas were receiving more water as a result of the melting of icebergs into the sea by the hot climate.
Mr Owusu-Sekyere said human activities such as the indiscriminate felling of trees accounted for climate change and stressed the need for the trees planted to be nurtured to replace those cut down.
