United States President Donald Trump has agreed to immediately grant a visa to the mother of slain Ghanaian teenager Javits Frimpong to enable her to travel from Ghana to New York to bid farewell to her son.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced the development in a social media post on Saturday, October 31.

He said he personally spoke with Mr Trump by phone to appeal for the visa to be granted.

The 15-year-old was fatally shot in the Bronx on Thursday, October 29.

His mother, Doris Adu Gyamfi, is currently in Kumasi, Ghana, where she resides.

“The murder of a child is a pain no parent should have to endure, let alone from thousands of miles away,” Mr Mamdani said.

“Javits Frimpong’s mother deserves to say goodbye to her son in person. I just got off the phone with President Trump and he has agreed to grant her visa immediately,” he added.

Javits was shot in the abdomen near East 171st Street and Crotona Place in the Claremont section of the Bronx shortly before 9:30 a.m.

He was taken to St. Barnabas Hospital by police officers but later died from his injuries.

Reports by US media indicate that the teenager was on his way to school when the shooting occurred.

Police are searching for three people in connection with the killing, but no arrests have been announced as of the latest reports.

Javits’ father, Thomas Frimpong, has said his son had complained about bullying at school and that two students had reportedly been suspended.

However, police have not established whether the alleged bullying was connected to the shooting.

The Government of Ghana has condemned the killing and pledged legal and consular assistance to the family as it works with US authorities to pursue justice.

In a statement issued on Friday, the Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa indicated that he has also spoken with the victim’s father to express the government’s condolences and support.
