Ghana's first president studied in America, and its current president studied in Moscow. Their stories show how Ghana has tried to keep friends on every side.
Nkrumah: the American classroom
Kwame Nkrumah arrived in Philadelphia in 1935 to study at Lincoln University.
He later studied at the University of Pennsylvania (1939-1943), earning several degrees by 1943. He led Ghana to independence in 1957. Yet his foreign policy was non-aligned, and the Soviet Union supported Ghana's early development in education, infrastructure and industrialisation.
Mahama: the Moscow classroom
At the third Russia-Africa Summit, President Mahama recalled studying in Moscow on a full scholarship between 1986 and 1988 . He called himself "a symbol of the friendship of the Russian people" . Moscow's Patrice Lumumba Peoples' Friendship University gave him an honorary doctorate during the visit.
The relationship today
Mahama told Putin the time is ripe to move beyond political ties to deeper economic cooperation. He also said Ghana has begun talks with Russia on its first nuclear power station. He welcomed Putin's readiness to resume trilateral talks on Ukraine. Before the trip, he said Ghana is friendly to America, the EU, China and Russia .
"I'm prepared to take the risks Nkrumah took"
Speaking to Ghanaians in Moscow, in a video shared on 30 October, Mahama said he is ready to face the risks of championing African unity, even a fate like Nkrumah's. He acknowledged that such a stand can bring overthrow or assassination, citing Nkrumah and Patrice Lumumba. His words: "It has its risks, as you said, and Nkrumah suffered it."
The history he points to is real. Nkrumah was overthrown in February 1966 while on a state visit to China . He had stopped in Beijing and planned to continue to Hanoi. He never returned to Ghana.
Questions that remain
Some commentators ask who is courting whom, since African leaders keep travelling to Moscow . Others say a summit hosted by Moscow is an odd venue for a peace appeal. Earlier allegations that Mahama sought Russian campaign funding were reported with warnings about Russia's record in West Africa . These remain allegations, and I found nothing confirming them. Ablakwa's own figures show 62 Ghanaians killed in the Russia-Ukraine war.
The test for Mahama is whether Russian ties bring real gains, such as energy projects and trade, without costing Ghana its independence of judgment. Whether the Nkrumah comparison is fair is a question readers can weigh themselves.
