Dr Palgrave Boakye-Danquah, a senior aide to former Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has alleged that some inmates attempted to poison the politician in prison.

According to Dr Boakye-Danquah, Wontumi disclosed the alleged incident to him when he appeared in court on Tuesday, October 27, as he marked his 100th day in custody.

Speaking to the media, he said prison authorities had initiated investigations to establish what happened.

“Chairman is okay. We haven’t received any medical reports from the doctors. But I have received indications that over the past week, some prison inmates attempted to poison him,” he said.

Dr Boakye-Danquah said he subsequently contacted the prison commander, who confirmed that the matter had been referred for investigation.

“He mentioned that to me today when he came to court, and I have spoken to the commander, and the commander said he has asked them to investigate the matter, so he will come back to me on that issue. This attempted poisoning of his life happened a few days ago,” he added.

He said the ongoing investigation was expected to determine whether the alleged poisoning attempt occurred and establish the circumstances surrounding it.

However, Dr Boakye-Danquah did not disclose what substance was allegedly used, who may have been behind the incident or the motive for the reported attempt.

The allegation has not been independently verified.

Wontumi calls for prison reforms
Dr Boakye-Danquah also reiterated Wontumi’s call for reforms within Ghana’s prison system, particularly measures aimed at improving inmate welfare, rehabilitation and the reintegration of prisoners into society.

Wontumi is currently serving a 20-year prison sentence after being convicted over mining activities allegedly carried out on his Samreboi concession without approval from the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources.

He has appealed against his conviction and sentence and is seeking temporary release while the appeal is determined by the Court of Appeal.
