Executive Director of INSTEPR and member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Communications Team, Kwadwo Poku, has predicted that Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa would be prosecuted in January 2029 if Dr Mahamudu Bawumia becomes President.
Mr Poku made the prediction while commenting on the controversy surrounding Ghana’s recent evacuation exercise in South Africa, arguing that Mr Ablakwa, as minister responsible for the sector, should accept responsibility for any shortcomings within his ministry.
He said a minister must be accountable for the actions and decisions taken under his or her authority.
“In any advanced jurisdiction under democracy or under the military regime, anything that happens within your ministry, you are responsible. If you don’t want to be responsible, don’t go and join,” he said on Joy News.
Mr Poku referred to the leadership principles associated with former President Jerry John Rawlings, saying those in charge must be prepared to take responsibility for the conduct of their subordinates.
He criticised the Foreign Affairs Ministry for what he described as a failure to acknowledge wrongdoing in relation to the evacuation exercise.
According to him, although the controversy could eventually be overshadowed by other political developments, the underlying issues would remain unresolved.
“We can whitewash this. We can let this thing go on for another three weeks, four weeks, five weeks. Like the same Ghana that we have, something new will come up right now,” he said.
Mr Poku maintained that any errors or alleged wrongdoing associated with the exercise could eventually be revisited, regardless of how much attention the matter receives in the short term.
“But what doesn’t go away? That error, that corruption, that problem sits there. And in January 2029, when Dr Mahamudu Bawumia is president of this country, Honourable Ablakwa will have his day in court. Simple,” he added.
