The Member of Parliament for Navrongo Central, Hon. Simon Akibange Aworigo, has secured the renovation of the long-abandoned Upper East Regional Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Centre, paving the way for the facility to support digital skills training and technological development across the region.
The facility, which operates under the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC), had remained unused for eight years before efforts by the MP led to its rehabilitation.
At a brief ceremony to officially hand over the renovated facility from the contractor, GIFEC’s Upper East Regional Manager, Martin Abeba, expressed satisfaction with the completion of the renovation and reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to putting the centre to its intended use.
Mr. Abeba disclosed that GIFEC would furnish the facility and provide the necessary ICT equipment to enable students and community members to acquire digital skills and contribute to development in their communities.
Hon. Aworigo described the restoration as a moment of joy, noting that the intervention followed concerns raised by constituents after he was elected to Parliament.
He paid tribute to the late Mark Woyongo, whom he credited with initiating the project, and expressed concern that the facility had remained unused following the change of government in 2016.
The MP explained that he made several visits to the Ministry of Communication to advocate for the centre’s rehabilitation, efforts which eventually resulted in the award of a contract for the renovation.
He commended the contractor for the quality of work delivered and stressed that the facility was intended to serve the entire Upper East Region, rather than Navrongo Central alone.
According to him, the renovated centre has the potential to equip young people with relevant digital competencies, improve their access to technology-based learning and prepare them for employment opportunities in an increasingly digital economy.
Hon. Aworigo also highlighted the government’s One Million Coders Programme, noting that the regional facility could help expand access to coding and other digital skills training for young people.
He expressed appreciation to President John Dramani Mahama, Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations Samuel Nartey George, and GIFEC Chief Executive Officer Rasheed Computer for their support towards the renovation.
The MP further called on residents of the community hosting the centre to take ownership of the facility and protect it against vandalism, misuse and neglect to ensure its sustainability.
Although the renovation has been completed and the facility officially handed over to GIFEC, the centre is expected to undergo furnishing and equipment installation before it becomes fully operational.
When fully equipped and operational, the centre is expected to provide opportunities for students, young people and other residents across the Upper East Region to acquire practical ICT skills, strengthen digital inclusion and improve their prospects in the technology sector.
