Dr Thomas Akugri has emerged as the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Constituency Secretary for Zebilla after securing 434 votes despite being hospitalised at the Zebilla Government Hospital and unable to actively campaign due to ill health.
His victory over four other contenders has been described by party supporters as an inspiring show of confidence in his competence, loyalty and years of service to the party.
Although he was absent from the voting centre because of his health condition, delegates voted overwhelmingly for him, with supporters attributing the outcome to his track record within the party.
"He may be on a sick bed, but his work in the party is not sick. The delegates have spoken," a supporter who could not hide his joy said.
The announcement of his victory triggered jubilation at the election grounds, with some party faithful describing the outcome as one of the most emotional moments of the constituency elections.
Meanwhile, Anawai Clement Ayaaba was elected Zebilla Constituency Chairman after polling 730 votes.
