Savannah Chiefs, stakeholders urged to demand road linking Damongo, Kintampo, Tinga and Buipe

Damongo, which became the regional capital of the Savannah Region following the referendum on December 27, 2019, needs strategic road infrastructure to improve accessibility, attract investment and accelerate development.

The town has often been described by some people as having “one way” access, a situation they believe limits travel and investment in the area, which is home to Mole National Park, one of Ghana’s major tourist attractions.

To address this concern, proposals have emerged for the construction of a road from Damongo through Baochipe to Kintampo in the Bono East Region, alongside another road linking Tinga and Buipe in the Savannah Region.

These proposed routes are expected to improve connectivity, facilitate trade and open up new opportunities for investment and modernisation across the region.

Covering approximately 34,790 square kilometres, the Savannah Region is Ghana’s largest region and requires a well-connected road network to support its development and link communities to major commercial centres.

Several chiefs and stakeholders in Gonjaland have therefore been urged to champion the proposal by presenting it to the Minister for Roads and Highways, Kwame Agbodza, for consideration under Phase Two of the Big Push programme.

Currently, travelling from Damongo to Techiman through the Fufulso Junction covers about 277 kilometres and takes approximately four hours and 38 minutes. Another estimate puts the distance between Damongo and Techiman at about 295 kilometres.

Using the 202-kilometre distance between Sawla and Wenchi as a reference, the proposed road from Kintampo to Damongo is estimated to cover about 170 kilometres. This could make the route approximately 107 kilometres shorter than the existing Fufulso stretch, potentially reducing travel time and transportation costs.

The proposed road projects are being presented as strategic interventions that could improve access to Damongo, strengthen links between regions and support the Savannah Region’s long-term economic and infrastructural development.
