Eight Sacked at BNI as Probe Exposes Leaks and Security Breaches, Says The New Republic

Eight officers have been sacked at Ghana's Bureau of National Investigations (BNI), according to the front page of The New Republic on Thursday, 22 October 2026. The paper's lead headline says an "explosive probe" exposed "rot, leaks and security breaches" at the agency.

About the BNI
The BNI is Ghana's domestic intelligence and counterintelligence agency. It is part of the National Security Council and oversees counterintelligence and internal security. It exists under the Security and Intelligence Agencies Act (Act 526) of 1996. Because it handles sensitive intelligence, leaks and security breaches inside it carry high stakes for national security.

Not the first shake-up
The agency has seen leadership changes after controversies before. In 2019, its then director was relieved of his post over security lapses and a lack of coordination between the police and the BNI. At the time, a security analyst warned that the manner of the dismissal could send the wrong signals to subordinates.

The BNI is also active in current cases. It began investigating a former National Sports Authority Director-General over an alleged World Cup visa scheme.

Why it matters
If the paper's account holds, dismissals over leaks and breaches suggest the agency is trying to enforce discipline from within. They also raise questions that the public will want answered:

What information leaked, and how did it get out?

Who ordered the probe, and what did it find?
Will the dismissed officers face further action, or any chance to appeal?

What reforms will follow to prevent a repeat?

The officers have not, as far as the front page shows, been publicly charged with any offence. A dismissal is an employment decision. It does not by itself prove criminal wrongdoing.

What is not yet clear
I could see only the headline. The front page does not name the eight officers, their ranks, who ordered the dismissals, or what the leaks and breaches involved. It also does not say whether the government or the BNI has commented.
