Condemning Sexual Harassment In Schools And The Need For Decisive Leadership

A school must be safe. That is non-negotiable.

Parents hand over their children to schools with the absolute trust that the classroom will nurture them, the dormitory will protect them, and adults in the school will guide them. That trust is the foundation of education. When it is broken through sexual harassment or abuse, society has failed in a sacred duty.

Sexual harassment in schools is reportedly on the rise across the country. This is disturbing and must not be tolerated in any form. No learner deserves to be harassed, coerced, intimidated or abused. It destroys the dignity of the child, shatters parental trust, and damages the reputation of schools as centres of learning and character.

The Responsibility of Leadership

The head of a school sets the tone for the entire institution. What leadership tolerates, the school normalizes. What leadership condemns with action, the school avoids.

Decisive leadership is therefore required to:

  1. Declare zero tolerance for any form of sexual harassment against learners and staff, without fear or favour, regardless of status or position.
  2. Set a personal example of discipline, integrity and appropriate boundaries for all staff and learners to emulate.
  3. Create and publicize clear, safe and confidential reporting channels so victims can speak without fear of intimidation or victimization.
  4. Ensure that every staff member understands that the school must be safe for both staff and learners, and that anyone caught in this web of misconduct will be dealt with decisively.

From Condemnation to Action

Condemnation must be followed by prompt action. When an allegation is made:

  • The safety and welfare of the alleged victim must be secured first, including psychosocial support.
  • There must be no concealment, minimization or delay in reporting.
  • The appropriate procedures and law enforcement processes must be triggered immediately.
  • Full cooperation must be given to investigators.

Silence in the face of such allegations is complicity. Parents send their children to school to be protected, not to be abused.

The Need for Professional and Thorough Investigation

While every allegation must be taken seriously and listened to with empathy, listening must not replace thorough investigation. Justice for the victim and fairness to all parties require professionalism.

Fabrications, though not the norm, can happen and can destroy innocent lives when emotions override facts. That is why investigations must be impartial and painstaking:

  • Separate emotion from facts.
  • Insist on corroboration through medical reports, timelines, opportunity and independent witnesses.
  • Examine the logic and motive behind allegations.
  • Follow due process at all times.

Let us fight sexual harassment decisively, but let us ensure justice is done through proper procedures.

A Collective Call

Keeping schools safe is a shared responsibility of school authorities, teachers, parents, students, the Education Directorate and the community.

No learner should ever have to trade sexual favours for marks, promotion or protection. No one should abuse the power and authority that comes with being an adult in a school.

Schools must remain what they were meant to be — safe spaces for learning, growth and hope. Achieving that requires not just words of condemnation, but visible, consistent and decisive leadership.
