The ECOWAS Business Council (EBC) has unveiled a private sector-led initiative to mobilise investment in energy sufficiency and drive industrialisation across West Africa.
The initiative, dubbed “Power W.A. (Power West Africa) for Industrialisation”, seeks to prioritise regional energy sufficiency as a catalyst for industrial growth.
The strategic framework was finalised during a meeting between the ECOWAS Commissioner for Economic Affairs and Agriculture, Dehpue Yenpea Zuo, and Prof. Hassan Mahmud, Chief Economist of the Dangote Group, at the Dangote Industries headquarters in Ikoyi, Lagos, on October 2, 2026.
Prof. Mahmud also serves as the focal person for Aliko Dangote, Chairman of the ECOWAS Business Council.
Discussions focused on aligning the priorities of the new ECOWAS management with the operationalisation of the Business Council.
The deliberations also drew on decisions taken at the 69th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Council of Ministers held in Freetown, Sierra Leone, in July 2026.
Commissioner Zuo was accompanied by Oluonye Peter O. Chukwudi, Acting Director of Private Sector and Industry, and Benedict D. Robert, Executive Assistant to the Commissioner.
