The Complementary Education Agency (CEA), in partnership with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), has trained adolescent youth leaders in the Volta Region to promote reproductive health education and help prevent gender-based violence (GBV).
The three-day workshop, held from October 14 to 16, 2026, at the Volta Regional Museum in Ho, brought together participants from various districts to equip them with practical skills and knowledge to educate their peers on adolescent health, safety and well-being.
Representing CEA’s Executive Director, Hon. Daniel Kwesi Ashiamah, and the Agency’s management, Madam Lilly Asamoah reaffirmed the Agency’s commitment to inclusive education and youth empowerment through partnerships. She also commended the Regional Director, resource persons, staff and participants for their contributions to the programme.
In his opening remarks, the Volta Regional Director of CEA, Mr Samuel Atsu Klu, acknowledged the support of traditional authorities, development partners and other stakeholders.
He stressed the importance of providing adolescents with accurate reproductive health information and appropriate guidance to enable them to make informed decisions. He urged the youth leaders to serve as responsible peer educators, promote gender equality and help prevent abuse and exploitation.
Mr Klu further encouraged participants to support survivors of abuse without judgment and direct them to appropriate professional and protection services.
Facilitators from the Ghana Health Service and the Planned Parenthood Association of Ghana led sessions on reproductive health, human growth and development, personal hygiene, decision-making, relationships, contraception, family planning, sexually transmitted infections, HIV, drug abuse and gender-based violence.
The final day featured a micro-facilitation exercise, during which participants were divided into four groups to demonstrate their understanding of the topics covered and their ability to communicate the information effectively to others.
At the end of the workshop, participants expressed appreciation for the knowledge and practical skills acquired, pledging to share them with their peers and communities.
The initiative is expected to strengthen community-level efforts to promote informed decision-making, prevent gender-based violence and create safer, more supportive environments for adolescents across the Volta Region.
