The number of people forced from their homes in the central Sahel has more than doubled since 2020. On Friday 9 October, the UN refugee agency UNHCR warned that nearly four million people have been displaced in Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger. The total includes 818,000 refugees and asylum seekers.
How the numbers have grown
The UN refugee agency said the figure is more than double that of six years ago, before a wave of coups in a region already marked by instability and violence. The comparison point is October 2020. Then the region had more than 1.7 million internally displaced people and 365,000 refugees. UNHCR puts the current total at 3.8 million as of 31 July 2026.
What is driving it
UNHCR's own explanation is wider than the political upheaval. The agency said the crisis is made worse by continued attacks on civilians, climate-related shocks and severe humanitarian funding shortfalls. UNHCR's regional director for west and central Africa, Abdouraouf Gnon-Konde, said these pressures are eroding livelihoods and pushing more families to move within and beyond the region. The coups are the timeline marker in the reporting, not the cause named by the agency.
Beyond the borders
The crisis is no longer confined to the three countries. Almost 500,000 Burkinabè refugees and asylum-seekers had sought safety in neighbouring countries in 2026, up from more than 300,000 at the end of 2025. UNHCR warned that hundreds of thousands have been displaced to coastal West Africa, including Benin, Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana and Togo. Mauritania hosts some 169,000 Malian refugees. Within Mali, Koro, in the Bandiagara region, was sheltering some 86,000 Burkinabè refugees as of July.
Host governments are planning for the longer term. On 11 September in Lomé, Benin, Ghana and Togo signed tripartite agreements with Burkina Faso and UNHCR to prepare for voluntary, safe and dignified returns when conditions allow.
Children and funding
More than half of registered refugees and asylum-seekers in the central Sahel are under 18, yet only one-third of refugee children have access to school. The money is not there. In September, UNHCR's Sahel response was only 27 percent funded, against needs of $329.6 million. That shortfall hits housing, identity documents and basic services.
Why it matters for coastal West Africa
For countries like Ghana, this is a security and humanitarian issue as much as a distant crisis. Displacement on this scale strains weak public services, raises tensions between host and refugee communities, and can create openings for armed groups. Prevention depends on stability in the Sahel and on funding that matches the scale of the need.
