Captain Blessed Godsbrain Smart's office has commended President John Dramani Mahama for directing relevant government authorities to assess the stalled Mumford Fishing Harbour project after a petition sought its completion.
In a statement issued and signed by Captain Smart on Thursday, October 15, 2026, on behalf of the Mumford community, the office thanked the President for responding swiftly to its concerns and taking steps to find a lasting solution to the unfinished harbour.
"On behalf of the chiefs, fisherfolk, fish processors, traders, youth and the entire Mumford community, I respectfully express our profound gratitude to Your Excellency for responding swiftly to my petition concerning the completion of the Mumford Fishing Harbour," the statement stressed.
The office said the President's directive to the Central Regional Minister and the Ministry of Transport to visit the project site, assess its current state and develop a plan for completion had renewed hope among residents.
It described the intervention as evidence of responsive leadership and a willingness to address the concerns of communities whose livelihoods depend on public infrastructure.
"Mr President, this decisive intervention demonstrates responsive and compassionate leadership," the statement asserted.
"It confirms that under your leadership, the concerns of ordinary citizens and deprived communities will not disappear into bureaucratic silence. You have listened, understood and acted—and the people of Mumford are deeply grateful," it stressed.
Harbour completion expected to boost local economy
The statement highlighted the importance of the Mumford Fishing Harbour to the economic prospects of the coastal community, describing the project as central to the livelihoods of fisherfolk, fish processors, traders and other residents.
It said completing the facility would improve the safety and productivity of fishing activities, strengthen fish handling and processing, create employment opportunities for young people and stimulate local commerce.
The project is also expected to improve economic security for women whose livelihoods depend on fishing and related activities.
"For the people of Mumford, this project represents dignity, opportunity, prosperity and renewed confidence in the future," the statement said.
According to the office, the President's intervention has turned a long-standing expectation into a credible prospect of action, with residents hopeful that the directive will lead to the project's eventual completion.
"The people will remember that when their concerns were respectfully brought before you, you did not hesitate to respond."
The statement further maintained that petitions become meaningful when leaders listen and act, adding that development requires political authority to be exercised with compassion, urgency and purpose.
Team Smart pledges cooperation
Captain Smart's office said it was prepared to work with the Central Regional Minister, the Ministry of Transport, relevant technical agencies and other institutions tasked with inspecting the site, assessing the outstanding work and preparing a completion plan.
While expressing appreciation to President Mahama for his intervention, the office called for the directive to be implemented without delay.
It said the community hoped the assessment would lead to the mobilisation of the necessary resources to complete the harbour and deliver the expected economic and social benefits to residents.
