The Convention People's Party (CPP) has received with shock the comments made by the Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, during his interview with Joy FM on the appointment of the two new Deputy Electoral Commissioners.
In the interview, Mr. Ofosu Kwakye openly admitted that the newly appointed deputy commissioners are members of the NDC, adding that President John Dramani Mahama appointed them to “balance” the Electoral Commission because some “supposed” NPP members are already serving as commissioners.
Our question to Mr. Kwakye is simple: If the Electoral Commission must be “balanced” with partisan members, then where is the CPP representative? Why is there no CPP member appointed as a commissioner?
His statement, coming from a lawmaker and a government communication officer, is irresponsible and reckless.
The Constitution of Ghana — the supreme law of the land — clearly establishes an entrenched position on the non‑partisanship of persons appointed to the Electoral Commission. Any attempt to justify partisan appointments undermines this constitutional safeguard.
While the CPP does not believe that the Electoral Commission can overturn the will of Ghanaians after elections, we must not downplay the dangers of negative public perceptions. Ghana has experienced post‑election violence and litigations before — at a time when the political affiliations of commissioners were only rumours.
Now, with Mr. Ofosu Kwakye openly confirming that the two Deputy Electoral Commissioners are NDC members, how are other political parties expected to accept the outcome of the 2028 elections in good faith?
The Convention People's Party (CPP) therefore demands a bipartisan parliamentary inquiry into the political affiliations of the newly appointed deputy commissioners.
We further call on the Council of State to treat Mr. Ofosu Kwakye's reckless statement with the seriousness it deserves and advise the President to suspend the appointments until the bipartisan parliamentary committee presents its findings to the Ghanaian public.
Long Live the Democracy of Ghana.
Forward Ever.
Signed:
Osei Kofi Acquah
National Communications Director, CPP
