BCI Walk 2026: Dr Wiafe Addai calls for early detection

Breast Cancer International (BCI) has organised the BCI Walk for the Cure 2026 at Mampong in the Ashanti Region to raise awareness about breast cancer and encourage early detection and treatment on Saturday, October 10, 2026.

The campaign brought together traditional leaders and other participants to educate the public on the dangers of breast cancer and the need for people to seek medical attention when they notice changes in their breasts.

The programme was led by Dr Mrs Beatrice Wiafe Addai, the president of Breast Care International, who stressed that breast cancer is not a death sentence when detected early and treated properly.

She encouraged the public to take breast health seriously by going for medical check-ups and seeking professional healthcare instead of delaying treatment.

Dr. Wiafe Addai also called on individuals, families and communities to support people living with breast cancer as they go through treatment and recovery.

Breast cancer is treatable, curable, preventable and survivable when it is presented to the hospital in time. Families must support their relatives when diagnosed with the disease,” she emphasized.

This year's campaign was held under the theme "Our Walk, Our Fight, Our Future", which highlights the importance of collective efforts in the fight against breast cancer.

The paramount chief of the Mampong Traditional Area, Nana Osei Bonsu III, and the queen, Nana Agyakoma Difie II, attended the programme as special guests to show their support for the campaign.

Nana Agyakoma Difie II, urged the public to stop associating breast cancer with spiritual causes and instead seek medical treatment when they notice unusual changes in their breasts.

She explained that breast cancer should be treated as a medical condition and encouraged people not to allow fear, stigma or misconceptions to prevent them from seeking professional care.

Nana Agyakoma Dufie II further shared that she had experienced a similar situation and sought medical attention, using her experience to encourage others to take changes in their breasts seriously.

She advised women and other members of the public to report unusual changes in their breasts to qualified health professionals for proper examination and treatment.

The 2026 edition was also sponsored by Delta Air Lines as the airline marked the 10th anniversary of its partnership with Breast Care International.

The collaboration has supported efforts to expand breast cancer education and screening while encouraging individuals and communities to seek medical attention without delay.

Delta Air Lines Operations Service Manager, Sarah Annan expressed delight at the large turnout and reaffirmed the importance of partnerships in addressing the disease.

“It is an honour to be part of this year’s BCI Walk for the Cure and to see so many people come together in support of this important cause,” she stated.

She added, "Seeing thousands of Ghanaians, alongside survivors, healthcare professionals, partners and community leaders, come together with such energy is a powerful reminder that this is a cause that belongs to all of us.”

She noted that the partnership with BCI had helped expand access to breast cancer education and screening, raise awareness and address barriers that often delay early action.
