Germany Opens Its Doors to Ghanaian Talent, and the Ambassador Is Leading the Push

Feature Article Germany Opens Its Doors to Ghanaian Talent, and the Ambassador Is Leading the Push
SUN, 11 OCT 2026

Germany is short of workers, Ghana has a large young workforce, and the Ghana Career and Migration Fair has become the main place where the two meet. Behind it stands a German ambassador who has made legal, safe migration one of his priorities.

A fair built for safe pathways
The fair is run by the Ghana-European Centre of Jobs, Migration and Development, in collaboration with the European Union and the German Development Cooperation (GIZ).

The 2025 edition, themed "Unlocking Skills for the Future of Work", brought together over 60 local and international employers, innovators and migration experts and sensitised participants on proper job migration and ethical recruitment in Germany and other EU countries.

The fair is growing: since 2018 it has welcomed over 20,700 participants and hosted more than 450 exhibitors. A 2026 edition was scheduled for 30 September in Takoradi, with 60+ employers and recruiters, CV reviews and career guidance. I found no report on it yet.

The ambassador's role
Ambassador Frederik Landshöft has been consistent about the message. At the 2025 fair, then as ambassador-designate, he said Germany had taken ambitious measures to attract talent, including a skilled immigration act passed two years earlier, and called it the right time for Ghana and Germany to build their future together.

His 2026 priorities are security in West Africa, job-creating economic partnerships, and strong people-to-people ties.

In a recent interview he said Germany wants to expand legal pathways for skilled labour migration from Ghana, as it faces an ageing population and worker demand in several sectors, and noted eight young Ghanaians had just left for vocational training in Germany.

He also gave a practical warning that matters as much as the opportunity: beware of people offering visa or migration help, and rely on official sources such as the Embassy's website and social media. Fake agents are a real danger to migrants' savings and safety.

His engagement goes beyond jobs. In Bolgatanga in August he called for an integrated strategy on climate-driven migration and reaffirmed Germany's support for peacebuilding, conflict prevention and sustainable development in Ghana. That links the migration agenda to the pressures that push people to leave.

What Ghanaians should know
Use only official channels: the German Embassy in Accra, DAAD Ghana, GIZ and the fair.

Never pay anyone who promises a guaranteed visa.

Vocational training (Ausbildung) is a legal route for young people alongside skilled work.

Language skills and recognised qualifications are the usual hurdles.

The other side of the ledger
Legal migration helps young Ghanaians and a German economy that needs workers, but it also draws on skills Ghana needs at home, as the health-worker debate shows.

The test is whether ethical recruitment, training partnerships and returning skills benefit Ghana too. That is the next conversation Ambassador Landshöft and Accra should have.
