The Commander of the 15 Armoured Brigade, Brigadier General Mark Alo, has stated that Exercise Thunderbolt 2026 is strengthening the Ghana Army's ability to respond effectively to an evolving security environment characterized by fluid, highly dynamic and increasingly asymmetric threats. He noted that the exercise has enhanced army’s marksmanship, combat readiness and operational effectiveness, equipping them with the skills required to operate in complex modern battlefields where conventional frontlines and clearly identifiable targets are no longer guaranteed.
Speaking at the closing ceremony of the exercise in Sunyani, Brig Gen Alo emphasized that the contemporary operational environment demands highly trained and disciplined soldiers capable of adapting to emerging security challenges. He explained that modern adversaries often employ unconventional tactics, operate within civilian populations and exploit complex environments, making precision, professionalism and sound judgment critical requirements for mission success.

According to him, Exercise Thunderbolt serves as an important training platform for sharpening weapons handling, improving shooting proficiency and strengthening teamwork among formations and commands across the Ghana Army. He added that the exercise also fosters healthy competition, esprit de corps and the exchange of best training practices.
Brig Gen Alo noted that the objectives of this year's exercise had largely been achieved, describing the competition as a demonstration of soldierly competence, mental resilience and military precision rather than merely a contest of scores.
He further stressed that marksmanship remains an operational necessity in today's security environment, enabling soldiers to accurately identify and engage legitimate targets while minimizing collateral damage and protecting innocent civilians.

The exercise, held under the theme "Building a Combat-Ready Ghana Army through Professionalism, Teamwork and Marksmanship," is expected to contribute to the selection of a formidable Ghana Army team for Exercise Fire Blast 2026, where the three Services of the Ghana Armed Forces will compete for the coveted championship trophy.
Brig Gen Alo commended all participating formations and soldiers for their discipline and professionalism throughout the exercise and urged them to sustain the momentum by maintaining high training standards and operational readiness.
Warrant Officer Class One (WO1) Koli Emmanuel was adjudged Best Male Firer, while Lance Bombardier (L/Bdr) Acheaw Francisca emerged Best Female Firer.
He also congratulated Southern Command for emerging overall winners of Exercise Thunderbolt 2026 and encouraged other teams to use the outcome as motivation to excel in future competitions. The occasion was graced by Joseph Addae Akwaboa Esq and Charity Gardner, Bono and Ahafo Regional Ministers respectively.
