A member of the National Communication Team for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Ali Ibrahim, has made a candid revelation, disclosing that members of the ruling party celebrated late into the night following Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s victory in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential primaries.
Dr. Bawumia clinched the NPP flagbearer position on January 31, 2026, securing 56.48% of the total votes to defeat his main contender, Kennedy Agyapong, who conceded defeat after early projections showed a commanding lead for the former Vice President.
Speaking as a panelist on Hot 93.9 FM’s Hot Morning Drive, hosted by Oman Nana, Ali Ibrahim admitted that the NDC had anticipated a different outcome and was genuinely relieved by the final results.
According to him, the NDC was closely monitoring the race, expecting Kennedy Agyapong to pull off a victory due to his political weight and appeal.
"We were expecting Kennedy Agyapong to win, looking at his pedigree...We thought he was far ahead of Dr. Bawumia... So when Bawumia won, we were very happy," he stated.
He added that the news sparked spontaneous celebrations among several NDC communicators and party faithful across the night.
"Some of us didn't sleep the whole night," he revealed. "We partied throughout the night."
