Families of 19 prospective National Youth Service Corps members abducted in Imo State are in panic after their captors reportedly demanded N50 million for each victim, a total of N950 million. That is about $706,000 in all, and roughly $37,000 per graduate.
The graduates were travelling from Ibadan, Oyo State, to NYSC orientation camps in Abia and Akwa Ibom when gunmen attacked two buses on the Owerri-Onitsha Road in the Umunoha area of Imo State on Thursday.
The buses belong to Uko Akwa Ibom Motors, and the passenger manifest showed 30 people on the two vehicles. The company's managing director, Isiah Akpan, confirmed the attack. He said the gunmen blocked both vehicles and took 19 passengers, all corps members, into the bush.
The abductors contacted some of the families and demanded the N50 million per person. One parent said the kidnappers called on her son's phone and made the demand. The family saw their son and other captives sitting on the ground in the bush, crying, during a video call. She asked Saturday PUNCH where petty traders would find such money.
One of the victims was identified as Precious Oladipupo, a graduate of Obafemi Awolowo University. Friends of the abducted graduates have taken to social media to appeal for support.
The Imo police spokesperson, Henry Okoye, said security agencies are conducting a coordinated operation to locate the remaining victims. He could not immediately confirm whether the people already rescued were among the abducted corps members.
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Southwest Zone D, has called for the ransom claims to be verified and for direct official contact with the affected families. The group said the government cannot decide where a young person must serve and then treat the safety of the journey as the graduate's personal responsibility. NANS also demanded a review of long-distance postings.
A pattern of attacks
The Imo attack came 36 days after 15 prospective corps members were abducted on the Aloma-Egane Expressway in Ofu, Kogi State, and later rescued. In May, Abuja lawyer and corps member Eunice Ameh was abducted and regained her freedom after a reported ransom payment.
A 2023 report by the Foundation for Investigative Journalism found at least 80 corps members abducted between 2013 and 2023. Saturday PUNCH's own findings show more than 20 corps members killed in attacks between 2015 and 2026.
