Sanitation Day: Is Government Serious This Time?

Feature Article Sanitation Day: Is Government Serious This Time?

Ghana will observe National Sanitation Day on Saturday, October 3, 2026, and the exercise doubles as the national commemoration of World Cleanup Day. The Accra Metropolitan Assembly has directed shops, markets and other commercial establishments to suspend operations from 6am to 12 noon. If you can, join your community tomorrow and help clean your surroundings.

Accra: the national flagship
The Accra Metropolitan Assembly will host the national flagship exercise, led by the Minister for Local Government, Mahama Ayariga. The Assembly will deploy Public Health Officers and its Sanitation Task Force across the city to monitor compliance and enforce sanitation regulations.

Kumasi: closures and a call for change
The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly has announced a massive clean-up at Alabar in the Afia Kobi Electoral Area. Trading and commercial activity there will close from 6am to 12 noon, and commercial vehicles will not operate in the affected areas. The city has also been vocal about the programme's weaknesses.

A KMA environmental health officer admitted earlier this year that public participation had not been very encouraging, and the Assembly began involving senior high schools. In July, the Kumasi Mayor proposed moving the exercise to the first Friday of each month to draw more government agencies, private institutions and corporate bodies.

Sekondi-Takoradi: a warning on turnout
In an earlier edition, the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Chief Executive said he was not satisfied because commercial activity continued while people should have been cleaning. That is the central challenge across cities.

The system behind the day
The programme is backed by structures. President Mahama relaunched the day in September 2025, and it is observed nationwide on the first Saturday of every month. A new performance framework for chief executives includes strict sanitation indicators.

Plans announced at the relaunch included a sanitation hotline, a central monitoring dashboard, and monthly sanitation reports from assemblies through the Regional Coordinating Councils.

The Minister at the time said 80% of the District Assemblies Common Fund had been released to support sanitation activities, removing financial constraints as an excuse for non-performance. He also admitted that enthusiasm for the exercise had declined since its 2014 launch.

The test ahead
Seriousness will be judged on the other 29 days of the month. Residents can fairly ask whether the hotline works, whether the dashboard is public, and whether chief executives are really assessed on sanitation.

Without enforcement and drain maintenance, a clean-up day risks becoming a photo opportunity. For now, the call is simple: sweep your street, clear your gutter and bag your waste.
