Residents of the Manhyia South Constituency in the Ashanti Region have expressed mixed views over the Economic and Organised Crime Office’s (EOCO) handling of their Member of Parliament, Lawyer Nana Adjei Baffour Awuah.
The MP voluntarily reported himself to EOCO at about 10 a.m. on Thursday, October 1, 2026, to assist with an ongoing investigation, after the Accra High Court issued a warrant for his arrest.
EOCO had told the court that earlier attempts to get the MP to report for questioning had not been successful.
However, speaking to OTEC News on Friday, October 2, during interactions at Ashtown, Dechemso, Krofrom and Manhyia, some constituents questioned why the MP was kept at the EOCO office overnight despite having voluntarily reported himself.
One resident said the decision was unfair, arguing that the MP had shown willingness to cooperate with investigators.
“He has not done anything wrong, and he even reported himself to EOCO. I don't think it is fair to keep him there overnight. If there is an offence, the law should be allowed to work properly.”
Another constituent questioned the need for the overnight custody, saying the development had created concern among residents of the constituency.
“We want to know why our MP had to be kept there overnight. We are not against investigations, but the authorities must handle the matter in a way that will address the concerns of the people.”
Some residents, however, defended EOCO, saying the investigative agency must be allowed to complete its work without interference.
According to them, the fact that the MP remained in custody could mean investigators had not completed the processes they needed to undertake.
“EOCO is doing its work. If the investigators have not finished what they are doing, we should allow them to complete it. Nobody should be above the law.”
Other constituents also stressed that while the status of the MP as a lawyer and sitting Member of Parliament should be respected, it should not prevent the law from taking its course.
“No one is above the law. Whether you are a lawyer, an MP or an ordinary citizen, if there is an investigation, you must cooperate with the authorities.”
The residents nevertheless urged EOCO and other state security agencies to handle such matters fairly and transparently to avoid creating public perceptions of selective or unfair treatment.
