The Hidden Health Cost of The Fufu Pounding Machine: Why Fast Is Not Always Safe

Feature Article The Hidden Health Cost of The Fufu Pounding Machine: Why Fast Is Not Always Safe

In Ghana, fufu is more than food — it is our culture. For years, we prepared it with a wooden mortar and pestle. It was hard work, but it was natural and safe. Now, the fufu pounding machine has taken over our homes and chop bars. It makes work easier, yes, but we have ignored what it is doing to our health.

A Dirty Bowl Becomes a Breeding Ground for Disease

The biggest problem is poor cleaning. The fufu machine has many hidden corners inside the bowl and under the blades where fufu sticks. If the bowl is not cleaned well immediately after pounding, that old fufu remains there.

In a wet, warm place, bacteria and mould grow very fast on that leftover food. Within hours, it starts to rot. The next time you pound, the new hot fufu mixes with the old rotten one. You cannot taste it, but you are eating poison. This is why many people suffer from diarrhea, vomiting, severe stomach pain, and cholera after eating machine-pounded fufu. The sickness does not come from the cassava or plantain — it comes from the dirty machine.

Rust and Metal Are Entering Our Food

There are several uncounted effects of using the fufu machine that sellers will never tell you. One of them is metal contamination. Most cheap machines on the market are made from ordinary iron, not food-grade stainless steel. The nature of iron is that once water and metal become intact, it rusts. And fufu preparation is all about water. When the inside starts to rust, tiny particles of rust and metal peel off and mix with the fufu as it pounds. Day after day, you are eating metal in small quantities. Over time, this can damage your kidneys, liver, and intestines. It can also cause long-term stomach ulcers. A wooden mortar never rusts.

Convenience Should Not Replace Health

We all agree that the machine makes work easier. But we must think about our health first. Our old method of preparing fufu in our own traditional way — the natural way — was slow but safe. It gave us exercise, it kept our food pure, and it never added metal or bacteria to our food.

Let's prevent disease before it comes. If you must use a machine, buy only food-grade stainless steel, clean it thoroughly with hot water and brush immediately after every use, and dry it. But if you want 100% safe and natural fufu, let's go back to our mortar and pestle.

Our health is more important than convenience.
