An Accra High Court has issued a warrant allowing the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) to arrest Manhyia South Member of Parliament, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah.
The warrant follows an application by EOCO, which told the court that its officers had exhausted what it considered reasonable means of securing the legislator’s voluntary attendance in connection with an ongoing investigation.
EOCO also sought authority to search for and seize documents relevant to the investigation, citing concerns that evidence could be concealed, altered or destroyed.
The development follows an attempted arrest of the lawmaker at the premises of an Accra High Court on September 23, a development that has attracted greater attention.
EOCO is investigating alleged financial irregularities involving SIC Life Savings and Loans Company Limited.
The Office says it invited Mr Baffour Awuah twice in February to assist with the investigation in his capacity as Senior Partner of Sarkodie Baffour Awuah & Partners, a law firm that had been engaged by SIC Life to recover funds.
Meanwhile, the MP has disputed EOCO’s account, noting that the February correspondence was addressed to the Senior Partner of his law firm in relation to the firm’s client, SIC Life.
According to him, a representative of the firm subsequently engaged EOCO on March 4, March 18 and April 30 and submitted a written statement on April 30.
