Open Letter: Five Months After Fuveme Visit: Mr President, Where Is the Action?

Feature Article Open Letter: Five Months After Fuveme Visit: Mr President, Where Is the Action?
WED, 30 SEP 2026

Your Excellency John Dramani Mahama,

Today, 29th September 2026, marks exactly five months since you visited Fuveme to sympathise with victims of the devastating tidal waves and to see firsthand the destruction confronting the community.

You saw the devastation. You heard the cries of affected residents. And, most importantly, you gave the people hope.

During your visit to Fuveme on 29th April 2026, you assured them that the WACA ResIP 2 funds were secure and intact and that government would move ahead with the intervention. You also spoke of engaging the Volta River Authority (VRA) on the possibility of dredging the Volta Estuary to help address the flooding situation at the Lower Volta River.

There was also an expectation that the Anyanui–Aflao road would receive the necessary attention for reconstruction. The people of Anloland were, indeed, much thankful for your visit demonstrated in the rousing welcome they gave you on that day.

But so soon, five months have now passed, Mr. President.

What has changed?

Sadly, the people are yet to see the meaningful and concrete actions they expected following your great visit.

Mr President, we recognise that major infrastructure projects require technical assessments, designs, procurement and other statutory processes for their realisation. But five months is also enough time for government to demonstrate clear progress, provide timelines and show the affected communities that their plight remains a top priority on government agenda.

The people of Fuveme, and for that matter Anloland, cannot live on promises forever, Mr. President!

The sea is not waiting for procurement processes. It attacks anytime it pleases.

Every tidal wave brings renewed fear. Every delay leaves homes, livelihoods, roads and the future of vulnerable communities exposed.

Enough is enough!

We, therefore, respectfully ask Your Excellency to give the people a clear public update on the following:

  • What is the current status of the WACA ResIP 2 intervention?
  • Is the WACA ResIP 2 fund still safe and intact?
  • When will physical works actually commence?
  • Has the VRA been formally engaged on dredging the Volta Estuary, and what has been the outcome and what has been done so far?
  • When will actual dredging begin in the Lower Volta begin?
  • What concrete steps have been taken towards reconstruction of the Anyanui–Aflao road?
  • What immediate measures are being taken to protect the vulnerable communities while they wait for permanent solutions?

Mr President, Fuveme and for that matter Anloland do not need another sympathy visit when another disaster strikes again. They need concrete action NOW.

The people do not expect miracles. They expect the promises made to them to translate into visible work on the ground. That's their heart cry!

Your visit on 29th April 2026 created hope, real hope. Five months later, that hope is being tested. Would it pass the test, Mr. President?

History will not only record that you went to Fuveme. It will record what your government did after you went and left.

Mr President, the people are watching. The sea is advancing. Five months have passed. Where is the action? The Hope Promised?

Thank you for understanding our plea, pain, pang and prayer.

Yours faithfully,
