ECOWAS Parliament adopts 2027 work plan and budget at Accra session

The ECOWAS Parliament has adopted its 2027 Annual Work Plan and Budget Estimates at the end of its Second Extraordinary Session of 2026 held in Accra.

The session, which took place from September 21 to 27, considered a number of institutional, regional and budgetary matters affecting the Economic Community of West African States.

The Parliament also considered reports from its engagements on renewable energy for rural electrification, irregular migration and trafficking in persons, and the role of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in regional value chains.

The session followed the Second Parliamentary Seminar on climate change, environmental degradation, population displacement and growing insecurity in the ECOWAS region.

Members also considered the report of the First Ordinary Session of 2026, the mid-term implementation of the 2026 budget and the outcome document of the parliamentary seminar.

The Parliament further witnessed the swearing-in of new Members and considered activities of the ECOWAS Female Parliamentarians Association (ECOFEPA).

At the close of the session, Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, Rt. Hon. Hadja Mémounatou Ibrahima, said the 2027 programme and budget would provide the framework for the Parliament’s activities but stressed the need for effective implementation.

She identified infrastructure, transport, energy and connectivity as key areas requiring attention, alongside peace and security, democracy and increased participation of women in public life.

The Speaker also called for stronger follow-up to parliamentary resolutions and recommendations to ensure that decisions taken by the Parliament translate into measurable outcomes.
