Shot Dead in Office: Africa's Assassinated Leaders and What Their Deaths Left Behind

Since independence, several African leaders have died by gunfire in or near power. Their killings changed their countries' politics for decades, and many questions about who ordered them remain unanswered.

The early years
Sylvanus Olympio, Togo's first president, was awakened by soldiers who broke into his residence on the night of 12 to 13 January 1963. His body was found before dawn near the entrance of the US Embassy. He is often described as the first African leader killed in a coup after independence.

Patrice Lumumba became prime minister of Congo in June 1960. Army chief Joseph Mobutu deposed him that September, and he was executed on 17 January 1961 near Élisabethville, in Katanga.So he was no longer in office when he died. Scholars still debate the extent of foreign involvement, including that of the CIA.

In April 1975, Chad's president Ngarta Tombalbaye was shot by members of his own army.

Peace and revolution
Egypt's Anwar Sadat, who signed the Camp David Accords in 1978 and the Egypt-Israel peace treaty in 1979, was shot during a military parade in Cairo on 6 October 1981 by soldiers opposed to his policies.

Thomas Sankara, Burkina Faso's revolutionary president, was killed on 15 October 1987 in a coup led by his former comrade Blaise Compaoré, who then took power.Sankara had renamed the country and pursued reforms in education and land redistribution, and he remains a symbol for many young Africans.

The palace shooting
On 16 January 2001, DR Congo's Laurent-Désiré Kabila was shot four times in his office in the Marble Palace in Kinshasa, reportedly by a young bodyguard.His son Joseph was sworn in as president days later. Theories about who gave the order have never been settled, and some of those convicted were later freed.

Patterns and lessons
Several themes recur. Many of these killings came during coups or from within the security forces. Cold War rivalries, foreign interests and regional conflicts are alleged in some cases, though evidence varies.

Successors often consolidated power rather than answering questions about the killings. And truth has come slowly: it took decades for courts and archives to shed light on cases like Sankara's.
