Dr. Asiama’s exit from our board was due to busy schedule, not dispute or rot – GoldBod

The Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) has dismissed suggestions that Bank of Ghana (BoG) Governor Dr Johnson Asiama’s decision to step down from its governing board is linked to wrongdoing or a dispute between the two institutions.

The clarification follows Dr Asiama’s disclosure at the Bank of Ghana’s 132nd Monetary Policy Committee meeting on September 24 that he had resigned from the GoldBod board about five months earlier and no longer attended its meetings.

“The fact that Dr. Asiamah no longer sits on the Board of the GoldBod, does not mean that there is any ongoing rot at the GoldBod. Neither is there any fight between the BoG and the GoldBod,” GoldBod Media Relations Officer Prince Kwame Minkah said in a statement on Monday, September 28.

GoldBod said the Governor in a letter dated May 11, nominated the BoG’s Second Deputy Governor, Mrs Matilda Asante-Asiedu, to represent him on the board due to his busy schedule.

GoldBod said the arrangement is permitted under the Ghana Gold Board Act, 2025 (Act 1140), which provides for the Governor or a representative not below the rank of a director to serve on the board.

It said similar arrangements had been made by other government officials serving on the board.

The Ministry of Finance, GoldBod said, was represented on the board from the outset by Deputy Finance Minister Thomas Nyarko Ampem due to the Finance Minister’s busy schedule.

It added that the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, initially served on the board himself but nominated his Chief Director, Marcus Haligah, in January 2026.

GoldBod said the Governor’s decision should therefore be viewed within the same context.

The clarification comes after Dr Asiama’s disclosure generated questions about why he had left the GoldBod board and whether the decision was connected to concerns about the relationship between the central bank and GoldBod.

The New Patriotic Party had previously raised concerns about Dr Asiama’s membership of the GoldBod board, particularly in relation to the BoG’s financing of GoldBod’s gold-purchasing operations and reported losses associated with the domestic gold purchase programme.
