Mahama Pushes for Aviation Ecosystem Partnership, Not Just Aircraft Purchases, in Talks with Boeing

Ghana is exploring the establishment of a regional Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) hub as part of a proposed strategic partnership with American aircraft manufacturer Boeing, aimed at strengthening the country’s aviation industry.

The envisioned facility would deliver aircraft maintenance, repair and technical services to airlines operating across West Africa and potentially the wider African market, positioning Ghana as a key service centre in the region.

The initiative was discussed when President John Dramani Mahama met senior Boeing executives in New York on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly.

The proposed MRO hub is a central pillar of government’s broader plan to revive Ghana’s national airline while building the infrastructure, skills and technical capacity required to transform the country into an aviation and logistics hub.

Boeing has expressed readiness to support Ghana’s national carrier project and other aviation development initiatives. The company has also indicated that, subject to the necessary structures and implementation arrangements, Ghana’s national airline could potentially return to the skies within about 18 months.

President Mahama stressed that Ghana’s engagement with Boeing must extend beyond aircraft acquisition, underscoring the need for investments that strengthen the wider aviation ecosystem.

“Ghana does not want its relationship with Boeing to be defined simply by the purchase of aircraft. We want a strategic partnership that helps us build an aviation ecosystem—creating skilled jobs, transferring technology, strengthening our industrial base and positioning Ghana as an aviation and logistics hub for West Africa,” he said.

The proposed partnership also includes aviation training, skills development and technology transfer, with government seeking to create more opportunities for young Ghanaians to pursue specialised careers in the aviation sector.

As Ghana advances its Reset Ghana agenda, the MRO hub and broader Boeing partnership are expected to play a pivotal role in shaping the country’s aviation future.
