Let's Stop Burning Our Own Houses: Put That Socket Off!

Look around your room right now. How many sockets are ON with nothing using them? One? Two? Four? That is how most home fires start in Ghana. We wait for ECG, we wait for Fire Service, but the truth is, we cause most fires ourselves with one lazy habit - leaving appliances and wall sockets ON when not in use.

A SMALL LIGHT, A BIG FIRE

You turned off your TV with the remote, but the red light is still there. Your phone charger is empty but still hot in the wall. Your extension under the bed is ON 24 hours. When ECG brings light with high voltage, or when wires get hot, that small current becomes a spark. One spark on a curtain, a mattress, a carpet - and your whole house is gone in 10 minutes. Fire Service will come, but by then everything is ashes. If it's not working, it should not be ON.

THE RULE TO SAVE YOUR HOME:

• Before you SLEEP - Check.
Make it a habit. Stand up, walk through the hall and kitchen. Iron off? Water heater off? Chargers off? Sockets off? It takes 60 seconds. Those 60 seconds can save your children's lives.

• Before you GO OUT - Check.
Going to work, church, or market? Don't leave your house on life support. Switch off everything except your fridge and freezer. No one should come back to meet smoke.

• Don't overload ONE socket.
One socket, one extension, with TV, fridge, phone, fan, iron all inside? That is a fire waiting to happen. That extension will heat, melt, and catch fire. Spread the load. And when not in use, put it OFF.

•Teach Everyone.
Tell your children, your house help, your husband, your wife. A socket is not a toy. If you are not using it, SWITCH IT OFF AT THE WALL. Let's not lose one more.
