Drug bust: 'Ghana’s reputation is not one party’s reputation’ – Dr. Adomako Kissi 

A former Member of Parliament for Anyaa Sowutuom, Dr. Dickson Adomako Kissi, has expressed concern over Ghana’s increasing association with major illicit drug seizures.

He cautioned that the development could damage the country’s international reputation.

His comments come amid recent drug busts in Ghana and other countries involving consignments reportedly linked to Ghana.

He questioned how large quantities of illicit drugs could leave Ghanaian ports and airports without the involvement of individuals with access to critical points within the country’s supply and transport networks.

“Let me voice my opinion largely about my dissatisfaction with Ghana's authorities in terms of allowing our nation to be a hub or a transit point for illicit drugs,” he said.

The former MP said Ghana’s reputation is a national asset and should not be allowed to suffer because of the activities of individuals or groups involved in the illicit drug trade.

He said the development could also have implications for Ghanaian travellers, particularly if the country becomes associated with narcotics trafficking in the eyes of foreign authorities.

The former lawmaker further questioned when Ghanaian authorities first became aware of the alleged networks involved in moving large quantities of cocaine through the country.

According to him, the movement of heavy consignments of cocaine would require a significant level of coordination and access to ports, airports or other points within the country’s logistics chain.

“If under your leadership something like this can pass through your port, and there’s no documentation official, though now people are coming up with excuses that they knew of it, and they were trailing it, and all kinds of things, that is still very difficult to swallow,” he said.
