Former NPP Deputy General Secretary and private legal practitioner, Lawyer Augustine Obiri Boahen, has filed a defamation suit at the Kumasi High Court against two social media personalities over publications in which he claims they accused him of using the name of the Asantehene to extort money from them.

The writ of summons, filed on September 17, 2026, by his counsel, Evans Osei Bonsu, Esq., of Enso Nyame Ye Chambers, Sunyani, names a Kumasi-based businesswoman, Auntie Ohemaa Mercy of Fish Market, Race Course, Kumasi, as the 1st Defendant.

William Amankona, operator of the YouTube channel MUNUFIE POLITICS @ OLD BORGA in Chiraa, has been named as the 2nd Defendant.

According to the Statement of Claim, Lawyer Obiri Boahen, a former Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and former Minister of State at the Ministry of Interior from 2007 to 2009, describes himself as a private legal practitioner of 40 years’ standing.

He further claims to have represented Ghana internationally as Chairman of Ministers responsible for security in West Africa and says he has built a reputation for honesty and integrity both locally and internationally.

Alleged social media publications

The Plaintiff claims that in early September 2026, the 1st Defendant published content on TikTok and Facebook accusing him of using the name of Otumfuo to defraud her.

The Statement of Claim says she made the allegation in a local Twi dialect as follows:

“Lawyer Obiri Boahen sei ara na ɔde Otumfuo din gyegyee sika a ɔgyee me ho fifty million sɛ ɔde rekɔma Otumfuo… Me na meboo dua… Onnye nipa papa… Obiri Boahen deɛ onkita suban papa ode Otumfuo din didii papa, wagu Otumfuo anim ase.”

Lawyer Obiri Boahen argues that, in their natural meaning, the words portrayed him as dishonest, deceitful and corrupt.

He further claims that on September 13, 2026, the 2nd Defendant republished the video on his YouTube channel under the title “Obiri Boahen is HOT” and added commentary in a local Twi dialect.

The Statement of Claim quotes the commentary as follows:

“NPP maame bi wɔ Kumasi… ɔse saa NANA OBIRI BOAHEN YƐ KƆRƆMFOƆ… Obiri Boahen, Ɔnnyɛ nipa… NPP decided to suspend Nana Obiri Boahen because ɔmo firi sɛ nano ɛtoro.”

The Plaintiff says the publication conveyed the impression that he was a thief and a blabbermouth.

Lawyer Obiri Boahen maintains that the allegations contained in the publications are completely false and that the Defendants distorted his original political commentary by taking it out of context.

According to his Statement of Claim, his actual comments concerned a call for President John Mahama to exercise caution and strengthen oversight over appointees whom he alleged were underperforming and causing scandals.

He also says his comments stated that members of the NPP were resolved to use all lawful political means to recapture power from the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Alleged malice

On the issue of malice, the Plaintiff intends to rely on several matters contained in his pleadings.

He claims the 1st Defendant had no reasonable grounds to believe the statements she published were true, while the 2nd Defendant allegedly reproduced the material for viewership despite knowing it was false.

The Plaintiff also alleges that the 1st Defendant had previously harboured ill-will towards him and had been made to kneel and apologise on several occasions by the Manhyia Palace sitting in arbitration in Kumasi.

He further claims that the 2nd Defendant demonstrated dislike towards him through remarks made at the conclusion of the publication.

Lawyer Obiri Boahen says the publications had attracted 7,538 views as of the filing of the suit and continued to circulate.

He claims the publications have seriously damaged his character, credit and reputation as a lawyer of 40 years and exposed him to public scandal, odium, ridicule and contempt both in Ghana and internationally.

Reliefs sought

The Plaintiff is seeking a declaration that the publications made by the Defendants are defamatory.

He is also seeking general damages for defamation, together with an order directing the Defendants to delete the offending videos and social media posts.

Lawyer Obiri Boahen is further asking the court to order the Defendants to issue an unqualified retraction and public apology in terms to be determined by the court.

He is also seeking a perpetual injunction restraining the Defendants, their agents or anyone acting on their behalf from further publishing defamatory material concerning him.
