Ghana Maritime Authority dismisses claims of ineffective vessel monitoring in Ghana’s waters

The Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA) has rejected claims that its vessel monitoring system is ineffective and that vessels operating within Ghana’s maritime waters are not being monitored.

The Authority said the claims were made by New Patriotic Party National Communications Director hopeful Dennis Miracles Aboagye during Accra-based TV3’s Daily Brief and Joy FM’s Newsnite programmes on Tuesday, September 22.

According to the GMA, its maritime surveillance system remains operational and is used to maintain round-the-clock monitoring of vessels within Ghana’s maritime jurisdiction.

“The GMA categorically refutes these claims. They are false, misleading, and do not reflect the operational reality of maritime surveillance in Ghana,” the Authority said in a statement issued on Wednesday.

The GMA said it uses maritime domain awareness tools to monitor vessels and protect offshore oil and gas facilities, pipelines and submarine cables.

It added that its surveillance operations follow standard procedures for tracking vessels, verifying their identities and checking compliance with maritime requirements.

“The GMA remains committed to continuous surveillance and the protection of Ghana’s maritime interests,” the statement said.

The Authority urged the public to disregard the claims and rely on official communications from the GMA on matters concerning maritime surveillance.
