NDC Deputy Western Regional Youth Organizer hopeful, Derrick Nana Asare, has commended President John Dramani Mahama for what he described as significant progress in Ghana’s economic recovery since the government assumed office in January 2025.
In a statement shared on social media, Derrick Nana Asare said recent economic indicators under the Mahama administration showed a marked improvement in macroeconomic stability and deserved recognition.
“President Mahama must be commended for transforming Ghana’s economy in such a short period. The progress we are seeing today is not accidental; it is the result of deliberate policies, discipline and commitment to rebuilding our economy,” he stated.
His comments come against the backdrop of recent assessments by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which reported that Ghana’s real GDP grew by 6.0% in 2025, up from 5.8% in 2024, while growth accelerated to 6.4% year-on-year in the first quarter of 2026.
The IMF also reported that headline inflation fell sharply, reaching 5.4% at the end of 2025 and 5.3% in June 2026, while Ghana’s primary fiscal balance moved from a deficit to a 2.1% of GDP surplus in 2025. International reserves also increased substantially.
Derrick Nana Asare further argued that the improvement in the cedi, declining inflation, stronger reserves and progress in debt restructuring were important indicators that Ghana was moving towards greater economic stability.
He, however, acknowledged that challenges remained and stressed the need for the government to sustain the reforms and ensure that economic gains translated into improved living conditions, employment opportunities and greater economic opportunities for young people.
“We must not become complacent. The work must continue, and the gains must be protected. What matters ultimately is how these economic improvements translate into better lives for ordinary Ghanaians, especially the youth,” he added.
The IMF similarly cautioned that Ghana still faces vulnerabilities, including fiscal risks from state-owned enterprises, financial-sector weaknesses and the need to maintain fiscal discipline and structural reforms.
Derrick Nana Asare called on Ghanaians, particularly young people, to remain engaged in the country’s economic transformation while supporting efforts aimed at creating sustainable jobs and opportunities.
