Volta Economic Forum: Transforming Potential into Wealth for the Volta Region

From Opportunity Showcase to Investment Execution: Seizing the Keta Harbour, Blue Economy, and Agro-Industrial Frontier
Feature Article Volta Economic Forum: Transforming Potential into Wealth for the Volta Region
TUE, 22 SEP 2026

The Volta Region stands at a critical economic crossroads. For decades, our region has been celebrated for its breathtaking landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and vast agricultural potential. Yet, potential alone does not feed families, create sustainable jobs, or build modern infrastructure. As the Volta Economic Forum kicks off under the powerful banner of "From Opportunity Showcase to Investment Execution," we must shift our collective mindset. This is no longer the time for abstract policy dialogues or long speeches; it is the hour for aggressive, strategic execution. Voltarians, both at home and in the diaspora, must actively seize the economic steering wheel and drive our region into an era of industrial prosperity.

This monumental shift is being driven by an influential lineup of traditional leaders, national policymakers, and economic advisors converging in Ho. Led by traditional icons like Togbe Afede XIV, the Agbogbomefia of the Asogli State, alongside the host, Volta Regional Minister Hon. James Gunu, the forum serves as a direct bridge between leadership and capital. Crucially, the presence of national heavyweights—including Chief of Staff Hon. Dr. Julius Debrah, Presidential Advisor on the 24-Hour Economy Mr. Goosie Tanoh, Board Chair Hon. Dr. Akwasi Opong-Fosu, and Minister for Trade, Agribusiness & Industry Hon. Elizabeth Ofosu Adjare—signals clear political will. Supported by advocates like Hon. Emmanuel Kwasi Bedzrah (MP for Ho West) and dialogue coordinators like CEO Mr. Simon Madjie, the message is uniform: the region is ready for open commercial operationalization.

To transform this backing into an economic powerhouse, local businesses and investors must aggressively scale up operations across our traditional and newly unlocked competitive sectors:

  • Commercialized Agriculture: Transition from subsistence farming to high-yield commercial farming. Focus on value-added agro-processing for regional staples like cassava, yam, rice, and vegetables to supply national and international markets.
  • Modernized Animal Husbandry: Establish structured livestock value chains. Invest in modern poultry, piggery, and cattle ranches equipped with local feed production mills to reduce dependency on imported meat.
  • High-Tech Fish Farming & Aquaculture: Capitalize on our massive water networks, including the Volta Lake and the ocean. Transition toward commercial aquaculture, modern cage farming, and advanced fish preservation and processing facilities.
  • The Keta Lagoon Wealth Restoration: Reimagine Ghana's largest lagoon not just as a geographic landmark, but as an economic engine. Invest in sustainable, commercial salt mining, eco-tourism resorts, and controlled shrimp and crab farming to create thousands of local jobs for the surrounding communities.
  • Lower Volta Mangrove Conservation & Economy: Protect and commercialize the extensive mangrove ecosystems along the lower Volta river basin. By introducing sustainable harvesting practices and eco-tourism, local economies can thrive while leveraging international carbon credit markets for environmental preservation.
  • The Bamboo Industrial Revolution: Introduce and scale up industrial bamboo cultivation across eligible soils in the region. Bamboo presents a goldmine for manufacturing eco-friendly furniture, construction scaffolding, flooring, and biomass energy, positioning the Volta Region as a leader in green industrialization.
  • The Keta Harbour Strategic Edge: Position local logistics, warehousing, and maritime services to exploit the upcoming Keta Port. The Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) has officially secured its Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) permit certificate, clearing the regulatory path for immediate investor engagement.
  • Phased Port Infrastructure Exploitation: With 42 local and international investors shortlisted, Phase 1 civil works—including the Port Administration Block—are setting the stage for a grand layout featuring a harbor basin, container terminals, general cargo berths, and a dry bulk terminal.
  • Coastal Protection and Integration: Businesses must align with the West African Coastal Areas Resilient Investment Project (WACA ResIP 2) and the newly launched Spatial Development Frameworks for Ketu South, Keta, and Anloga. This ensures future investments in processing zones, power-generation enclaves, and hydrocarbon terminals are protected from coastal erosion.
  • Value-Chain Integration: Stop selling raw materials. Build local packaging, branding, and cold-storage hubs so that maximum financial profits remain within the borders of the Volta Region.

A Call to Action for Every Voltarian

The future of the Volta Region will not be written by passive observers, but by bold entrepreneurs, disciplined investors, and united communities. The Volta Economic Forum is not just a government or corporate event; it is a historic blueprint for our collective survival and growth. We possess the fertile soil, the abundant waters of the Keta Lagoon, the resilient mangroves of the lower Volta, and a concrete gateway to global trade through the rapidly advancing Keta Harbour project. What we need now is an unapologetic commitment to local investment, capital deployment, and green innovation like the bamboo industry. Let us rise, pool our resources, support local enterprise, and build a resilient, wealthy, and industrialized Volta Region that generations to come will be proud to inherit. The time to execute is now!
