United Party leader Alan John Kwadwo Kyerematen has acknowledged what he describes as progress under the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government in stabilising Ghana’s economy, but says the durability of the gains will be the real measure of its economic performance.
According to him, improvements in macroeconomic indicators are important, but they should not be considered the ultimate indication of success.
Speaking on The Point of View on Channel One TV on Monday, September 21, Mr Kyerematen said the government’s ability to maintain the progress achieved over time would provide a more meaningful assessment of its economic management.
“If you ask me about my own assessment of what the NDC and President John Dramani Mahama have done, I would say, generally, they have done well, particularly stabilising the macroeconomy. The question we need to ask is whether they can sustain the progress that has been made.“I think that is a very important material question. Success is good and is very important but the real litmus test of success is when you are able to sustain it. So the question we need to ask can they sustain what they have done?” he stated.
Mr Kyerematen said the current improvements would need to be supported by policies and institutional systems capable of preserving economic stability beyond the short term.
He stressed that maintaining the gains made in the macroeconomy would therefore be as important as achieving the initial improvements.
