Burkina Faso Rallies Behind Niger After Failed Mutiny

OUAGADOUGOU/NIAMEY Burkina Faso has joined its Sahel allies in publicly backing Niger's military government after a failed mutiny in Niamey last month, one of the most serious threats to the junta since it took power in 2023.

On August 28 and 29, a mutinous faction of the Niger Armed Forces attempted a coup against President Abdourahamane Tiani in the capital. The plotters fired on sensitive sites for hours, including the air base near the airport known as Base 101. That base houses the general staff of the unified force of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), which groups Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso.

AES statement and Burkinabè condemnation

The AES issued a statement expressing "full support" for Niger and condemning what it called the soldiers' "betrayal." Burkina Faso and Mali condemned the attempted coup and expressed support for Tiani's government.

Delegation to Niamey
On Friday, September 18, Tiani received a delegation from Burkina Faso and Mali at the presidential palace in Niamey. He said the visit showed the AES is more than an alliance, and that the three countries would remain united and vigilant.

Other backers
Algeria was the first country to express support for Niger. It later sent a delegation to Niamey with four combat fighter jets and a military transport aircraft, which Niger's ruling council called a demonstration of strategic support.

Russia's Ministry of Defence confirmed it helped suppress the coup attempt, providing ground and aerial support.

Underlying strains
The mutineers appear to have included young soldiers from Ouallam, Tera and Dosso, areas whose troops have suffered heavy losses fighting armed groups, particularly the regional ISIL affiliate.

Analysts said the involvement of front-line troops points to growing frustration within the military. Burkina Faso, which has faced its own mutinies and coup attempts, is fighting the same jihadist threat.
