GES releases outstanding 2023 Capitation Grant arrears to basic schools

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has released outstanding 2023 Capitation Grant arrears to District Education Directorates for onward payment to public basic schools across the country.

In a letter dated September 14, 2026, and addressed to all Regional Directors, the Service confirmed that the funds had been transferred into the accounts of the various District Education Directorates.

“Management of Ghana Education Service wishes to inform you that Capitation Grant arrears for 2023 have been transferred to the various accounts of the District Education Directorates for onward disbursement to the schools,” the letter said.

The GES has directed Regional Directors to ensure that the money is transferred to the schools before the reopening of the first term of the 2026/2027 academic year.

It explained that the amounts credited to the district accounts included the Sports and Culture component meant for District Offices. The corresponding allocations for Regional Sports and Culture, it added, had also been sent to designated accounts of the Regional offices.

“Regional Directors are therefore by this letter, requested to ensure that the funds are transferred to the schools on or before the reopening of the 1st term 2026/2027 academic year to enable Heads of Basic Schools to operate seamlessly,” the GES said.

The Service further disclosed that a monitoring team from its headquarters would visit the regions to assess the disbursement process.

Regional authorities have consequently been urged to ensure the funds are transferred to the schools without delay.

The Capitation Grant is designed to assist public basic schools with their operational needs and reduce financial barriers that could prevent children from accessing basic education.
