AMA gives Dogo Beach squatters one week to vacate ahead of demolition

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has given occupants of Gbagbasetey, popularly known as Dogo Beach, one week to vacate the area ahead of a planned demolition exercise next week.

The occupants, located in the Ashiedu Keteke Sub-Metropolitan District, were given the ultimatum on Monday, September 14, when the Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, led an enforcement team to the area.

The team marked structures earmarked for removal with final warning inscriptions and urged occupants to remove their belongings before the exercise begins.

According to the Mayor, the one-week notice is intended to give occupants sufficient time to vacate voluntarily and avoid losing their belongings during the demolition.

He said the enforcement exercise forms part of the AMA’s broader efforts to restore order and ensure that public and designated spaces are used for their approved purposes.

Mr Allotey said the Assembly prefers to give affected persons adequate notice before demolitions and would only resort to enforcement if occupants fail to comply voluntarily.

He urged the affected persons to take the warning seriously and remove their structures and belongings within the stipulated period.

Mr Allotey added that the exercise was not intended to inconvenience residents but to enforce regulations and prevent temporary arrangements from becoming permanent unauthorised settlements.

Meanwhile, Dogo Beach, located opposite the Fire Service Training School, was originally designated as a temporary fishing bay and landing site for canoes.
