Promoting Islamic Education and Unity: NTV holds grand finale of Qur’an recitation competition in Tamale

North Television (NTV), the oldest and leading television station in the five regions of the North, has held the grand finale of the second edition of its Qur’an Recitation Competition in Tamale, with winners receiving various prizes and other forms of support. We have more in this report.

The event, held at the Bagabaga College of Education on Saturday, September 12, 2026, brought together contestants, parents, religious leaders and members of the Muslim community to celebrate Qur’anic knowledge and encourage young people to deepen their understanding and appreciation of the Holy Qur’an.

The overall winner, Muhammad Bello Muhammad Awwal, received a free ticket to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to perform either Hajj or Umrah. The second-place winner received a refrigerator, a smock and GH¢3,000 in cash, while the other contestants were presented with cash prizes and certificates of participation.

Speaking at the programme, the Deputy Minister for Roads and Member of Parliament for Tamale North, Hon. Alhassan Sayibu Suhuyini, called for greater investment in Islamic education. He said parents make significant sacrifices to secure quality formal education for their children and urged them to demonstrate similar commitment to their religious education.

Hon. Suhuyini also called for greater consideration for Muslim students in Christian-dominated schools, particularly those who wish to observe their Islamic prayers. He further pledged, together with the Member of Parliament for Kumbungu, Prof. Hamza, to fully support next year’s Qur’an Recitation Competition from its planning stages through to the grand finale. He also pledged to cover the prizes for this year’s winners.

The Kpalung Zobogu Naa, Mohammed Rashad Abdulai, who also serves as Secretary to the Gukpe-Naa, said the competition demonstrates the ability of Islam to bring people together and promote peace and unity.

He urged Muslims not only to recite the Holy Qur’an but also to understand and practise its teachings, particularly values such as peace, truthfulness, fairness and tolerance. He also called on Muslims to play an active role in the development of their communities.
