Majority Chief Whip Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor has hit back at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) over its concerns about political influence in appointments to the boards of State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs), accusing the Fund of crossing into Ghana’s domestic political affairs.

Mr Dafeamekpor insisted that the IMF must respect Ghana’s constitutional and legal provisions governing the appointment and composition of SOE boards.

“The IMF has been out against the NDC for some time and I think that it is time we call them to order. They are completely out of order,” he said on Eyewitness News on Friday, September 11.

His remarks followed an IMF Technical Assistance Report published in July 2026, which expressed concern about political considerations in the selection of board members and executives for major SOEs.

Mr Dafeamekpor, however, defended the government’s appointments, arguing that an individual’s political affiliation should not, on its own, prevent the person from serving on a public board.

He maintained that the key consideration should be whether an appointee has the required qualifications, competence and experience to perform the role effectively.

In support of his position, he pointed to the leadership of the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), arguing that people with political backgrounds can still successfully manage public institutions when they possess the necessary expertise.

The Majority Chief Whip also questioned the extent to which the IMF should comment on Ghana’s governance and institutional arrangements.

“They are beginning to meddle in our internal politics, and I don’t think that, as the supranational organisation, that is what they’ve been brought here to do. In a lot of jurisdictions. I would have demanded that the Country Director be removed or transferred because we have lost trust in him. And we know the meetings he is holding with the opposition. We know the discussions they’ve been holding; we know,” he disclosed.
